Spanish Champions Barcelona will play Copa Del Rey winners Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup, with the first leg in Madrid on the 21st August with the return fixture a week later at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona won the title last season by a huge fifteen point margin from bitter rivals Real Madrid, whilst Atletico beat their city rivals in extra time in the Copa Del Rey Final to claim the trophy and their place in the Super Cup fixture.
Barcelona FC
Both sides have been busy in the transfer market already this summer with more movement certain before the Super Cup fixture takes place, the Catalonians have recruited young Brazilian Neymar from Santos in a deal worth an enormous fifty-seven million euros, so he will be vying for a start in the Super Cup. Barcelona FC will be hoping that the capture of the hugely talented Brazilian will complement their star studded squad and perhaps push them on further in the Champions League, as last season’s seven goal aggregate defeat to eventual winners Bayern Munich was hugely disappointing and deemed unacceptable by Catalonian standards.
Athletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid had a good season last year as they finished third in La Liga, meaning they have qualified for next seasons Champions League, in addition they also won their tenth Spanish Cup with the bad tempered 2-1 extra time success against bitter cross city rivals Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid have suffered a blow as they have lost last season’s top scorer Radamel Falcao to cash rich French Club Monaco, as their offer of fifty million was simply too good to turn down for Los Rojiblancos. Coach Diego Simeone has stated that the club should try to sign quality reinforcements to offset the loss of the Colombian striker, so it will be interesting to see how this all develops during the summer as they have been linked with numerous players.
