It was clearly evident that Rafael Benitez would not be staying as Chelsea boss next season with his title of “interim” manager, but who will take charge at the club when he makes his departure?
There seems like only one man for the job and only one name being mentioned – former Blues manager Jose Mourinho. After Real Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League by Borussia Dortmund last week, Mourinho gave a massive hint at the possible switch by saying “I know in England I am loved. I know I am loved by some clubs, especially one.” Everybody naturally assumed that that one club was Chelsea. The move also looks increasingly likely after David Moyes was named the new manager of Manchester United following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, as Mourinho had also been linked with the role. Benitez, who has guided the Blues to the Europa League final but will leave at the end of the season, has acknowledged the fact that Mourinho is likely to return by saying “the next year there will be another manager. I think everybody knows who will be here.” Benitez admitted that he would feel “sad” to leave the club.
Mourinho is loved by nearly everyone at Chelsea and John Terry has told the press that he and some of the other players regularly exchange text messages with their former boss, so it is clear that he is still held in high regard at the club. The fans will definitely embrace “The Special One’s” return as Chelsea enjoyed a lot of success whilst he was at the club between 2004 and 2007. He won six trophies whilst at the club; two Premier League titles, two League Cups, an FA Cup and a Community Shield.
So, it certainly seems like Mourinho will be returning as manager next season and we are all just waiting for the official confirmation. It is where his heart belongs and he clearly loves the club and vice versa. Can he add to his six trophies at the club? Given his managerial talent proven throughout Europe it would be rude to say no, but we will just have to wait and see!
