Hamburger SV, also known as HSV, is the last “dinosaur” of the Bundesliga. Since 1963/64 is HSV in the 1.Bundesliga without being relegated. The club was formed in 1887 and won six Bundesliga titles and three Cup titles so far in the club history.
Current Situation
In recent history, HSV had countless managers and sports chief’s which explains the poor performance on the pitch. The list is long and includes names such as Huub Stevens, Martin Jol, Bruno Labbadia, Armin Veh, Michael Oenning and now Thorsten Fink. The lack of consistency within HSV almost led the club to his first relegation in club history last season. In the season 2010/11, HSV finished 8th in the table which was still a success compared to last season. Last season, HSV finished 15th just above the relegation zone – incredible for a club such as HSV. The club remains without success even with new manager Thorsten Fink.
The outlook for the 2012/13 season is not much better. Striker Mladen Petric left the club for Fulham as well as David Jarolim, Romeo Castelen and Jeffrey Bruma. Over the summer, Hamburg brought in 8 new players, totalling roughly €24m. Their headline signing being Rafael van der Vart from Tottenham for €13m as well as purchasing P. Jiráček and M. Badelj for €4m each and A. Rudņevs for €3.5m. Players like Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen), Maximilian Beister (Fortuna Dusseldorf) and center forward Macauley Chrisantus (FSV Frankfurt) were added to the current HSV squad. It remains to be seen how HSV will perform, but it is unlikely that the club will a contender for the Europa League places. Today, HSV plays all home games at the Imtech Arena which has a capacity of 57,000.

HSV has a total of about 71,000 members and is the third largest club in Germany. In addition, the club has established itself in third place of the “Time Table” of the Bundesliga just behind FC Bayern Munich and northern rivals Werder Bremen.
