17.02.2014 – Felix Magath was appointed as the new manager at Fulham FC and he has a history of leading clubs from crisis to glory. However, can he save the Cottagers?
Fulham FC announced on Friday that Felix Magath will be appointed as manager with immediate effect. The German received an 18month contract. Rene Meulensteen, who was manager for the past 2 months, was sacked by Fulham chairman Shahid Khan.
Magath will certainly install a winning mentality at Fulham. Magath has managed many clubs in his career such as Bayern Munich, VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart. He has won the Bundesliga three times most recently with Wolfsburg in 2009, and is the first German to manage in the Premier League.
However, he the German is known to drive a hard line. The nickname Quaelix is a combination of the German verb for torture and the name Felix. He believes that “Training must push athletes to their limits,” Magath once said. “Any player who is willing to improve themselves should enjoy training.” Needless to say, discipline has also been high on Magath’s list of priorities.
Those qualities certainly impressed chairman Shahid Khan and with only 14 games left, Magath needs to get the most out of the players at his disposal. Magath will meet a great squad with players such as Scott Parker, Darran Bent, Lewis Holtby and Konstantinos Mitroglou; a team that just hasn’t delivered this season. Hoever, Magath will make sure he will get the most out of his players.
Felix Magath is the sort of coach who could save the west London club from relegation but it will be fascinating to see whether his methods work in the long run, or even whether he changes them.
