Bayern Munich won their fifth Champions League title in the 2:1 victory at the sold out Wembley Stadium against Borussia Dortmund.
It took Bayern 4 years and 3 finals to finally win the European Crown. Last year, Bayern lost the final in a dramatic match last year against Chelsea FC after penalties. However, Bayern is finally back on the top of European football after a emotional match against rival Borussia Dortmund.
More than 150.000 German fans travelled to London without tickets and took over London. More noticeable, the German fans took over Wembley, home of English football. Never before have 2 German teams competed for the Champions League trophy before and the exciting game showed why those two teams were in the final.
Borussia Dortmund pressured immensely straight from the beginning with several chances through Lewandowski, Reus and Blaszczykowski. Bayern keeper Neuer had to show all his qualities to keep his team in the game. Dortmund looked much stronger in the first half. However, Bayern finally started their attacks at the end of the first half. Bayern came to there first chance through Mandzukic. Weidenfeller had to tip over a Mandzukic header. Robben had the greatest chance when he faced Weidenfeller in an one-on-one, but failed to convert.
Bayern scored the in the 60th minute after Ribery passed to Robben who played a superb cross to Mandzukic and the Croatian just had to tip in – 1:0 Bayern. The celebrations didnt last long and Dortmund was awarded a penalty just seven minutes later after Dante fouled Reus in the penalty area. Gundogan scored the penalty – 1:1. However, Bayern kept playing there attacking football and Subotic had to clear the ball in the last second after Muller passed Weidenfeller. Robben and Ribery made the difference. Ribery heeled a pass to Robben who ran through and put the ball past Weidenfeller with only two minutes left.
A year after heartbreak, Bayern is back on the top of European football. It was Bayerns fifth title, only Real Madrid and AC Milan have one more. It was also a game for Jupp Heynckes who will retire after the season and Pep Guardiola will take over.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “It’s always terrific to see the lads with the trophy in the dressing room. They’ve not yet realised just how magnificent their achievement is today. There was enormous pressure on the whole club after the shock we suffered last year. We wanted to win this trophy, in fact we had to at all costs. It was a magnificent match. Compliments to Borussia Dortmund who were magnificent opponents. Apart from Bayern Munich, the big winner today is the German Bundesliga.”
Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp: “We´re off to celebrate, well try to, anyway. We really had a chance to win this evening against a team who have bulldozed their way across the footballing world this season. We did ever so well and gave everything. We have to take defeat on the chin and take comfort from the fact that we played so well.”
FC Bayern is now set to play VfB Stuttgart in the German Cup and is able to secure the treble this season.
