The Atlanta Falcons will welcome the San Francisco 49ers to their Georgia Dome stadium on Sunday 20th January 2013 in the NFC Championship game. We are now at the business end of the Playoff and both teams will be determined to win in the battle to gain a place at the coveted NFL Super Bowl in February.
Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons topped the NFC South division, winning a massive thirteen out of sixteen games. It is their fourth time in qualifying for the playoffs. The Falcons gained a first round bye and then scraped past the Seattle Seahawks 30 – 28 in the divisional playoff with a Matt Bryant field goal with just thirteen seconds remaining. His high level of kicking makes Bryant one of the Falcons’ key players. Many of the seasons games came down to his kicking skill and he has only missed three field goals all year. Quarterback Matt Ryan is also fundamental in setting up the Falcons’ offensive attacks with killer passing and instinct.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are definitely a force to be reckoned with this season and will prove to be tough opponents in their second straight NFC Championship game as they also topped their NFC West division, winning eleven out of their sixteen games. They have won an impressive five Super Bowl’s in just fourteen years and will be looking to win this match so that they have a chance to gain another. The 49ers also had a first round bye, before going on to beat the Green Bay Packers 45 – 31 at Candlestick Park allowing them to progress to the NFC Championship game. Their key man is most certainly young, emerging quarterback Colin Kaepernick. He is a strong-armed pinpoint passer with great speed who creates a lot of problems for the opposition.
Stadium
The Georgia Dome has a capacity of just over 71,000 and has been a real fortress for the Falcons this season, who have lost just one in eight at their home ground.
It cannot be stressed enough how important this game is for both teams and their fans as the Super Bowl is the holy grail of the NFL and the players from both sides will be playing their hearts out to try and get there. It promises to be a highly captivating and entertaining game with the Falcons’ tight defense coming up against the 49ers’ high tempo offense. This is definitely a must watch game for all!
